Each section has a Tamil summary and the full English text. If they differ, the English text governs until a legally reviewed full Tamil text is published.
This notice is given under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and the Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025. It tells you what personal data Vizhi holds, why, for how long, who else handles it, and how to use your rights. We hold your location only if you choose to save a place. The position your browser gives when you press "My location" is used on your own device to move the globe and is not sent to us. Visits are counted without cookies and without knowing who you are (section 2, “Visit counts”).

Oliyon Research, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Contact for anything in this notice: குறைதீர் அலுவலர் · Grievance Officer, Oliyon Vizhi, connect@oliyon.in.
What we hold
| Data | Why | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| (a) Account: email address; display name; optional institution or town and "about you" text. If you sign in with Google, Google tells us your verified email address and name — nothing else, and never your password. | To sign you in and to contact you about your account or your reports | Your consent (s.6) |
| (b) Consent records: which statements you accepted or withdrew, document version and fingerprint, date and time, IP address, browser identification string | To show what you agreed to and when | Your consent; and compliance with law (s.7) |
| (c) Saved places: the name and position (latitude and longitude, to about a metre) of each place you save on the globe, and which one is your home | To open the globe there, and to work out when satellites pass over your home | Your consent |
| (c4) Tracked flights and ships: which flight or ship you track and until when (7 days; the positions themselves are public data from the feeds) | To keep and show the full log of each one you track | Your consent |
| (c5) Phone notifications: for each device where you turn them on, the push address your browser gives us (from Google, Apple or Mozilla's push service) and what you asked to be told about | To send you the notifications you chose | Your consent |
| (c3) Morning digest by email: that you asked for it (off unless you turn it on, on the digest page) | To email you the morning digest | Your consent |
| (c2) Watch zones: the name, centre and radius of each circle you watch, whether you asked for email about it, and the alerts that fell inside it (kept 30 days) | To show what is inside your zones and, only if you ask, to email you new alerts in them | Your consent |
| (d) Reports: what you tell us looks wrong on the globe — the kind of problem, the layer and item it is about, your message, and the position on the globe where you sent it — with the reviewer's decision and note, and dates | To check and fix the data, and to answer you | Your consent |
| (e) Technical data: your IP address, used for a short time to limit how fast requests may come and recorded in error logs only when something goes wrong. We keep no record that links what a member looks at on the globe — which places, flights or satellites — to an IP address, an account or a person. | Security, preventing abuse, keeping the service working | Legitimate uses (s.7) |
| (f) Sign-in codes: a six-digit code and its expiry | To verify that you control the email address | Your consent |
| (g) Complaints: name, email and what you tell us | To handle the complaint and keep the grievance register | Compliance with law (s.7) |
| (h) Reviewers appointed by us: areas of expertise, qualifications, an optional phone number (seen by administrators only), the date of appointment, status changes and who made them | To run the review team and keep a record of who may decide reports | Your consent |
| Usage counts kept by Vizhi itself — pages opened, layers turned on, objects followed, places saved, reports sent, and the words searched on the globe (how many times each, and how many of those searches were by signed-in members) — as totals per day; no IP address, account or browser is attached to them | To see what is useful, fix gaps and plan capacity | Not personal data |
We do not collect your phone number (except, optionally, from appointed reviewers), postal address, date of birth, government identity numbers, payment details or contacts, and we do not track your location. We do not use advertising, outside analytics services (such as Google Analytics), social-media buttons or tracking pixels; visits are counted only by a tool we run ourselves (“Visit counts” below).
Your device's location. When you press "My location" (என் இடம்), your browser asks your permission and then gives the page your position. Vizhi uses it on your device to move the globe and does not send it to us. It is stored only if you then choose "Save as home" or "Save this place", as in (c) above.
Cookies and browser storage. A session cookie when you sign in; a security (CSRF) cookie on forms; and a preference cookie, lang (Tamil or English), which holds nothing about you. The globe keeps your layer choices and last view in your browser's local storage only. Counting visits sets no cookie and uses no browser storage.
(Do Not Track, Global Privacy Control) எண்ணப்படுவதில்லை.
Visit counts. To learn which pages and features help people, we count visits with Umami, a tool we run ourselves on our server in Mumbai (insights.oliyonresearch.com). It uses no cookies and keeps no IP address. For each visit it records the pages opened and the time on them, the features used (such as “layer turned on”), the site or campaign link that brought you, your country and city, the kind of device, browser and language, and whether you were signed in — never who you are, anything you typed or searched, or where you looked on the globe. Browsers that ask not to be tracked (Do Not Track, Global Privacy Control) are not counted. These records are deleted after 13 months. Search words are counted per day by this tool, with no person attached.
Shared sign-in. A sign-in cookie shared by the Oliyon Research tools on oliyonresearch.com (oliyon_id) holds your email and name so the other tools can recognise you; it is deleted when you sign out. It is signed so that it cannot be altered, lasts at most 30 days, and gives no role or permission: each tool still asks for, and records, its own consent before it creates an account for you.
Installed app and offline copies. If you install Vizhi as an app, your browser keeps copies of the public pages you have opened on your own device. The globe, the alerts, sign-in, account and admin pages and all live data are never kept: they need a connection.
The AI assistant. When you ask the assistant a question, the question, the part of the globe you are looking at and your saved home place (if any) are sent to Anthropic's Claude API so it can answer, under Anthropic's commercial terms and privacy policy (anthropic.com/legal). We do not keep the question or the answer: we record only that you asked, when, and the tokens and cost, to apply your monthly allowance and to check the bill. Using the assistant is optional.
Third parties your browser contacts. The map and satellite pictures (tiles) come to your browser directly from Esri (server.arcgisonline.com), so Esri sees your IP address and which area of the map you are looking at, under its own privacy policy. All the live data — flights, satellites, earthquakes, alerts, weather — is fetched by our server and passed to you, so those sources never see who you are. When you open a flight's card, our server asks adsbdb.com for its route using only the flight's call sign. The typefaces are served by Vizhi itself. The sign-in page loads Google's sign-in button from Google; Google then sees that you visited it. Links to a source's own page take you to that site under its own policy.
Who can see it
- Only you see your saved places, your home, your watch zones and their alerts, and your list of reports.
- Reviewers see each report with the sender's display name, not their email address, and the position it was sent from. The reviewer master (தலைமை ஆய்வாளர்), whom an administrator appoints from Vizhi's own members, also sees the reviewers' names, email addresses and register details — not their phone numbers or administrators' notes — to appoint reviewers and hand them reports.
- Site administrators can see account details, including email addresses, to run the service and handle complaints. They see how many places a member has saved, not where they are.
- Data Processors who handle data on our instructions: Amazon Web Services (servers, database backups and email delivery through Amazon SES), in the AWS Mumbai region (ap-south-1), India.
- We do not sell, rent or share personal data for advertising or marketing. We disclose it to a government agency or court only when the law requires it.
How long we keep it
- Account data, saved places, watch zones, reports and reviewer details: while your account exists; alerts in a watch zone: 30 days. You can delete any saved place or watch zone at any time, on the globe or on your account page.
- When you close your account (from your account page), your email address, display name, affiliation and "about you" text are removed from your account at once, all your saved places are deleted, the positions are removed from your reports (which stay, without your name, as a record of what was checked), and any reviewer phone number and qualifications are erased. Because the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines) Rules, 2021 require it, a copy of your registration details (email address, display name, affiliation and the dates you joined and left) is then kept in a restricted record for 180 days, used only if the law requires it for an investigation, and deleted automatically after that. Nightly database backups are deleted automatically after 30 days.
- Sign-in codes expire after a few minutes and are of no use afterwards.
- Visit counts (Umami, “Visit counts” in section 2): deleted after 13 months.
- Error logs: rotated automatically by size. The administrator action log: kept for at least one year, as the Rules require.
- Consent records and the complaint register: kept for as long as needed to show what was agreed or decided, and for at most seven years after the account is closed or the complaint resolved. After closure they are linked only to the anonymised account.
Your rights
| Right | How |
|---|---|
| To know what we hold, and a copy of it | Account → Download my data (a JSON file of everything listed in section 2 about you, your saved places and reports included), or write to us |
| To correct or complete it | Edit your account, delete a saved place, or write to us |
| To withdraw consent and have your data erased | Account → Withdraw consent and delete account. Withdrawal is as easy as giving consent. It does not affect what was lawfully done before. |
| To nominate someone to act for you if you die or become unable to act | Write to us with the person's name and email address |
| To have a grievance addressed | The complaint form or connect@oliyon.in. We reply within 15 days at the latest. |
| To complain to the Data Protection Board of India | After using our grievance process, you may approach the Board as the Act provides. |
Children
Accounts are only for people aged 18 or over; every account holder confirms this when signing up. We do not knowingly process personal data of children. If we learn that an account belongs to a person under 18, we close it and erase its data.
Security
All traffic is encrypted (HTTPS). The database is reachable only from the application server, not from the internet; administrative access is limited to named administrators, and role changes and decisions on reports are logged; backups are stored encrypted in a private storage bucket. There are no passwords to leak: sign-in uses one-time codes or Google. If a personal-data breach occurs, we will inform affected users and the Data Protection Board as the Act and Rules require, describing what happened, the likely consequences and what we are doing about it.
Changes
If this notice changes in a way that affects how your data is used, its version number changes and account holders are asked to read and accept it again before continuing. Your earlier acceptances stay on record.
